The Last Rhinos: My Battle to Save One of the World's Greatest Creatures

06/11/2018

Lawrence Anthony's final book, "The Last Rhinos" published in 2012, focuses on the dire issue of saving the scarcely remaining Northern White Rhino located in Congo, Africa. Battling the dangers of living in the bush, the government approval of Congo, and the immense dangers of the rebels wrecking havoc within the country, Anthony pulls together a team of dedicated professionals to rescue the rhinos. Unfortunately, poaching runs rampant in Africa, especially in regards to the rhino for their beautiful, and highly sought after, horns. Anthony eloquently details the beauty he is surrounded by to complete the mission, but also the grave dangers he and his team face. Despite the immense risks, Anthony recognizes the critical state of the dwindling population, and knows that if they cannot complete their mission successfully, they risk losing an entire subspecies. Amidst all this, Anthony finds himself in the center of the war between the LRA and various African countries such as Congo, Central African Republic, and Southern Sudan, for peace among their people; something the country had not had in twenty years. The book also thoughtfully intertwines updates on the famous "rouge" herd Anthony acquired, as told in his book, "The Elephant Whisperer." "The Last Rhinos" takes readers on a journey through a dedicated man's undertaking of saving the Northern White Rhinos, and establishing peace within Africa.
