Shark Life: True Stories about Sharks & the Sea

Sharks are far and away my favorite animals. They are incredibly misunderstood creatures, who in fact, need our help now more than ever. In "Shark Life," Peter Benchley, who wrote Jaws, which eventually became the famous movie people across the globe still watch today, details his personal experiences with sharks following the success of the movie. He shares the shocking dive experiences he's had with a variety of species, as well as bits of information and stories regarding marine life such as orcas and eels.
At about three quarters of the way through the book, Benchley includes a piece he wrote titled, "The Day All the Sharks Died." I could feel the anger boiling my blood as I read this excerpt. Shark finning is absolutely detrimental to the ocean's vast, fragile ecosystems and just overall, mind boggling cruel. If you don't decide to read this book, although I think you should, at least look up this short excerpt or research the work Peter Benchley is doing to bring awareness to shark conservation.
"For all we read and hear about 'unprovoked shark attacks, I've come to believe that there's no such thing. We provoke sharks every time we enter the water where they happen to be, for we forget: the ocean is not our territory, it's theirs." - Peter Benchley, page 9
