Deep Survival

07/27/2018

This book first caught my eye because I love true stories and factual reads. Laurence Gonzales has not only lived through survival situations, but has also done countless research on the brain activity and emotional responses that are key to being a true survivor. This book describes the science behind survival as well as _______.

Well...I can say one thing for sure..this book will keep you guessing (and quite possibly re-reading chapters to try and comprehend what you've just read). The story is told through three different years of the characters' lives: middle school, and before and after the accident that lands Amber in a coma. As Amber struggles to discover the truth...

Sharks are far and away my favorite animals. They are incredibly misunderstood creatures, who in fact, need our help now more than ever. In "Shark Life," Peter Benchley, who wrote Jaws, which eventually became the famous movie people across the globe still watch today, details his personal experiences with sharks following the success of the movie....

"The One and Only Ivan" is a beautiful story of a kind and gentle gorilla who lives at The Big Top Mall; which happens to be both a mall, arcade, and surprisingly, a mini circus. "Something in the Water" has a very intriguing beginning. Right from the start, Steadman reveals a major development within the story, but then, just a few pages later, transports you back to how it all began. This leaves you questioning when that major detail will come into play or how it even happened, throughout the rest of the book....

I've had my eye on this book for quite some time. Reading about the ocean fascinates me. As someone who scuba dives and has seen a few octopus, I was instantly drawn to this book. "Soul of an Octopus" is told by naturalist Sy Montgomery, and details her intimate and curious experiences with octopus as she strives to learn...

The Child

"The Child" by Fiona Barton was a fantastic thriller. I agree with my fellow book lovers out there who enjoyed reading from the various characters involved with the case, especially the journalist. When a child's remains from years ago are discovered on a construction site, multiple cases are reopened in hopes of discovering the identity of the...

"The Book of Joy" is a heartwarming and eyeopening book told by Douglas Abrams as he facilitates dialogues between the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu throughout their historic week long visit in Dharamsala, India. These historic and inspirational leaders are known for their desire for peace and inner joy, as well as the trial and tribulations they've...

This book was both heartbreaking and inspiring. It is amazing to see the power of human will when it is tested to its' complete maximum. Author Barbara Demick unearths the horrors North Korean citizens face in their daily lives. From hunger, oppression, and lies, this book details the lives of a few specific citizens in their quest for truth...

Wonder

This is one of my all time favorite books and I believe that it is a must read for adults and children alike. Auggie's story teaches tolerance, friendship, and the power of self confidence. Auggie, a 10 year old who's facial deformities have always caused him anguish, yearns to fit in at his new school. Initially, Auggie struggles to...
